Program Note:
The "vocalise" is a genre that is not often used by composers. I wanted to use this particular format because of its free form and wise range in character. Even though this piece is without words and a narrative, I encourage the performers to envision a scenario or story as they perform. Each of the three movements is different in style and in character, and it is my hope that each section will convey a different set of emotional responses. While the movements can be performed together, it is also possible to perform the movements separately. This piece was commissioned by the Music Academy of the West as a part of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition.
